Remembering 11-Year-Old Chase McEachern from Barrie, Ontario

Chase McEachern loved hockey. At the age of five, as a centre for his Barrie, Ont. minor hockey team, he scored a whopping 130 goals. At age 11, he was assistant captain for the Vaughan Kings Minor Peewee AAA team. But in October 2005, after a school pick-up football game injury, doctors discovered his heart was beating dangerously fast — a condition diagnosed as atrial flutter.
After learning that irregular heartbeats affected athletes of all ages, 11-year-old Chase decided to launch a passionate campaign to make AEDs mandatory in hockey arenas and schools everywhere. As his mother, Dorothy, shared: “He realized that heart problems didn’t just affect older people.”
Chase even wrote to TV hockey commentator Don Cherry asking for his support. Tragically, on Feb. 9, before his campaign fully launched, Chase collapsed during gym class and suffered severe oxygen deprivation due to lack of an immediate defibrillator.
The Legacy That Changed Public Access AEDs Across Ontario
Today, Chase’s parents, John and Dorothy, and his brother Cole continue to champion defibrillator access alongside the Heart & Stroke Foundation. His legacy inspires our mission at First in Safety Training: equipping every Barrie workplace, school, and community center with reliable AEDs so help is always seconds away.
